Yours truly has been invited to present my paper from SOL Post 59, "MST3K
and You," at the Southwestern/Texas Popular Culture Association Annual Meeting
next month in Albuquerque. Yes, in the magical, far-away place where the sun
is always shining and the air smells like warm root beer and the towels are
oh-so-fluffy... where the shriners and the lepers play their ukuleles all day
long and anyone on the street will gladly shave your back for a nickel, I'll
be among a select few to make a presentation on how MST3K has had an impact
upon our collective culture. So drop on by the Hilton (not the world-famous
Albuquerque Holiday Inn, sadly) in the middle of next month if you're in the
area and join your fellow MSTies in celebrating the series at this academic
summit. Huzzah!
If you have a disstertation or a brain fart about MST3K -- or anything
inbetween -- I'd be more than happy to publish it in the SOL Post for all the
members to read. So get to writing!
With a new semester beginning at CSU, MSTies Anonymous of Colorado is
beginning its spring series of episode screenings in the Lory Student Center.
Be sure to check the list below and see exactly which episodes are on deck.
Okay to begin with, I need to explain our show a bit. It is a parody of
Power Rangers, but so much more. Mainly a group of superheroes transform to
battle monster and other creature. The creature for this show was going be a
robot: a robot made out of cardboard, spray-pained sliver and with the word
‘refrigerate’ on the side of it. My friend James made it and it looks as good
as the robot from “Santa Claus Conquers the Martins.” Since James made it, he
wore the costume and named it “Refrigeration 2000.” We deiced to keep the
robot as a bad guy. Well, by the third episode or so we needed the robot and
him to be in same scene. First, Jeff was going to be the robot, but he needed
to be in the scene, too. I tried on the outfit as a joke, when a discovery was
made. My arms fit in the long plastic tubs. (That is, to a point.)
Being a robot was neat. Though I did have trouble seeing out of the
eyepieces, standing up, and shaking the robot head, it was a fun experience.
Now that I was the robot I could name it. I thought “Refrigeration 2000” was a
good name, but it didn’t exactly roll of the tongue with ease. First, the
obvious names like Rusty came to me. Then it hit me: Skippy. Yes, Skippy the
Robot. Why Skippy? Well, I was watching “Family Ties” and two things struck
me. One, Mallory was kind of mean and should have gone out on one date with
Skippy. Two, Skippy was a strange, yet good name for a robot.
So how has my life changed? Not much different expect that now I feel
differently towards my fellow robots. I often wonder what Data or Kyten would
be like on a date. I’m more understanding toward Vicky of “Small Wonder.” I’m
wondering if Crow and Tom would accept me as robot brethren. Knowing C-3PO and
R2-D2 are the Bert and Ernie of the robot world. I'm finding Robby the Robot
(from Forbidden Planet) kind of cute. And finally, love towards the Tin Man
who only wanted a heart. I’m not sure how much more my life will change later
when I become Skippy the Robot. I do know that whatever happens, I know what
it’s like to be a human and a robot.

"Top 25 List of MST3K" by Trakeslin@aol.com
I have recently come to embrace the joys and pleasures offered from Mystery
Science Theater 3000 during this past year. I find some of my greatest joys in
my favorite episodes. In the sprit of giving and sharing, which is what the
holiday season is all about (from what they tell me), I would like to offer my
list of what I believe is the best 25 ever episodes made. I will admit that I
still have not seen half of Season 6, any of the KTMA shows, and 15 episodes
from Seasons 8-10. But thanks to some of the many generous tape trading web
sites, I shall soon see all of these episodes and after I do, I may make some
changes to this list. However, I find these shows to be extremely insightful
and relaxing to a troubled mind. I challenge everyone to offer his or her own
top 25 or top ten lists. Should I take some shows off my list? Should I add
more to them? Would you put mine in a different order? Please share your
knowledge and opinions. This new MSTie is very excited to learn from
experienced fans.

I’m a robot, coco-cako. Well not really, but I play one on TV. As many you
might know, some of my friends and I are making a TV show called Mega Ultra
Supper Troopers. On it, I play a nurse and also a robot. But I’m getting
ahead myself. I should tell how this happened and how it has changed my life.
